Objective of ASKURIS
The ASKURIS project aims at ensuring the drinking water supply of the City of Berlin in the medium to long term. Due to impacts of climate change and demographic development, the concentrations of anthropogenic trace substances are anticipated to increase in Berlin surface and ground waters. The ASKURIS project will use innovative analytical techniques in combination with effect-related assays to characterize and assess the emerging risks induced by anthropogenic trace substances and multi-resistant bacteria in the Berlin urban water cycle. In addition, it will investigate the capability and performance of the existing technological and natural barriers and review further technologies with respect to their ecological and economical sustainability. As a precursor to the full-scale implementation into existing plants, large-scale technological facilities reducing trace pollutants and bacteria will be examined. Auxiliary studies applying sociological research data will develop new approaches on risk communication with drinking water consumers. Using adjusted risk management instruments, a guide for drinking water and wastewater businesses will be developed.
